Preface to the 10th Edition

Carmel's Call is a call to seek the face of God in prayer, to find Christ in community and to serve our brothers and sisters in need.  This manual, Carmel's Call, is an effort to provide some of the structures to help the Lay Carmelite achieve these aims.

The tenth edition revises that which preceded it to a great extent.   It contains the new Provincial Statutes, which carry the force of the Lay Carmelite movement in the future.  Paraliturgies, that is, liturgies used outside the context of a Eucharistic celebration, have been created in order that ceremonies such as the installation of officers can have a context within the church's liturgical patterns.   Some sections that were included in earlier editions have been reinstated such as the morning offering, evening reflection, prayers for the deceased and a visit to the Blessed Sacrament.  Their time-honored worth is again becoming evident, this reflected too in the many requests received to include them once again.

The number of hymns have been increased and their music simplified.   No material in Spanish is included in this edition.  It is hoped that we may have in the future a complete manual for our Hispanic communities.  We have also given a greater significance to the blessing and conferral of a scapular, so that the commitment being made is understood by all involved.

At this time there are about 250 Lay Carmelite communities in the United States and Canada, a doubling of the number existing ten years ago.  It is a true sign that the laity is blossoming both in the church and in the Carmelite Order.  May this growth continue and may we all realize it is ultimately a following of Christ after the beautiful example of Our Lady.
